Golden Hour & Sunflowers: A Marion Illinois Senior Picture Session
There is just something about sunflowers in the summertime.
The color. The warm evening light. The slightly wild, carefree feeling of standing in the middle of a field with summer stretching out around you.
For this Marion, Illinois senior session, the sunflower field gave us the perfect setting for senior pictures that felt joyful, colorful and completely natural.
And that is exactly what I want senior pictures to be.
Not stiff.
Not a long list of poses you have to know how to do.
And definitely not pictures that look exactly like everyone else's.
Senior Pictures That Actually Feel Like You
Your senior year is such a strange and wonderful in-between season.
You're finishing one chapter while already starting to imagine the next one. There are last first days, Friday nights, college plans, best friends, big decisions and a whole lot of little moments you don't realize you'll miss yet.
Your senior pictures get to remember some of that.
That's why I love planning each Sharon's Seniors session around the person I'm photographing.
For this session, that meant sunshine, flowers, beautiful summer color and plenty of room to move.
We created the portraits Mom will want framed on the wall, but we also made the fun ones—the movement, the laughter, the little in-between expressions and those images that simply feel like her.
Why Sunflowers Are Perfect for Southern Illinois Senior Pictures
Southern Illinois gives us some incredible options for senior photography, and late summer is one of my favorite times to photograph here.
A sunflower field brings so much personality to a session without overpowering the senior.
The yellow flowers add beautiful color, while green leaves, open sky and warm evening light create that easy summer feeling. Add a great outfit and suddenly the whole thing feels a little bit nostalgic, a little bit editorial and a whole lot of fun.
It's especially beautiful during golden hour, when the sun drops lower and everything gets that gorgeous late-summer glow.
And no—you don't have to know what to do in front of the camera.
That's my job.
I'll guide you when you need direction and give you room to move and be yourself when you don't.
What Should You Wear for Sunflower Senior Pictures?
This is one of the questions I get asked most when we're planning senior pictures.
For a colorful location like a sunflower field, I love outfits that complement the location instead of competing with it.
Think denim, white, cream, warm neutrals, a great sundress, boots, sneakers or something with a little personality.
But here's my biggest rule:
It still needs to feel like you.
If you never wear flowy dresses, we don't need to suddenly turn you into the flowy-dress girl for senior pictures.
Bring me your style and we'll build from there.
Your session can also have more than one look. Something fun and casual can be paired with a dressier outfit so your final senior gallery doesn't feel like twenty versions of the same photograph.
Class of 2027: Your Senior Pictures Don't Have to Look Like Everyone Else's
This is one of my favorite things about photographing high school seniors.
Two girls can stand in exactly the same location and we can create two completely different sessions.
Your clothes, personality, interests, movement, expressions and the way we photograph you are what make the session yours.
Maybe you're a sunflower-field girl.
Maybe you're more downtown Marion with denim and sneakers.
Maybe you want tall grass and gorgeous golden light.
Maybe your dream senior pictures involve your Jeep, your guitar, your dog, your sport or something else that has been part of your story.
Or maybe you want to go somewhere completely unexpected.
I'm here for that, too.
